    Course Objectives:

    At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:

    Know the physiology of wound healing.

    Explain wound classification by etiology and characteristics.

    Describe pain parameters and pain management strategies related to wound care.

    Identify and discuss the basic management of pressure ulcers and deep tissue injury, diabetic, surgical and vascular ulcers.

    Identify general diagnostics related to the management of nonhealing wounds.

    Identify and recognize wound infections and describe the management of an infected wound.

    Jeffrey Niezgoda, MD

    Dr. Jeffrey A. Niezgoda, MD, FACHM, MAPWCA, CHWS, is a distinguished leader in wound care, hyperbaric medicine, and limb preservation. With over 30 years of experience, he has provided direct patient care, supervised medical facilities, and led innovative care at St. Luke’s Medical Center. Dr. Niezgoda is Past President of the American Professional Wound Care Association and Past President of the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine. He founded AZH Wound & Hyperbaric Center MKE and Advancing the Zenith of Healthcare, focusing on excellence in wound, hyperbaric, vascular, and regenerative clinical services. Additionally, as Kent Imaging’s Chief Medical Officer, he showcases clinical applications of near-infrared spectroscopy and provides medical and clinical leadership for Kent’s wound care product strategy and clinical integration. Dr. Niezgoda’s expertise extends to clinical research, medical device development, and international education through WebCME. He consults for industry, CMS, and the FDA, impacting healthcare worldwide.

    Dr. Thomas E. Serena MD FACS FACHM MAPWCA, Founder and Medical Director of The SerenaGroup®, is a renowned expert in wound care and research. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The College of William and Mary and Penn State Medical School, he completed his surgical residency at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

    Dr. Serena has established wound care centers across the United States and globally. He has led over 100 clinical trials and holds patents on wound care devices and dressings. Internationally recognized, he has published over 200 papers, authored three medical textbooks, and delivered over 1000 invited lectures worldwide. He has held leadership roles in organizations such as the Wound Healing Society, Association for the Advancement of Wound Care, American College of Hyperbaric Medicine, and American Professional Wound Care Association. Dr. Serena is also committed to medical relief work, having served with Health Volunteers Overseas and initiated wound clinics in Vietnam.

    Dr. Kathya Zinszer, a podiatric physician, specializes in diabetes, wound care, and limb salvage with over 12 years of clinical and outreach experience. Formerly faculty at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, she now attends at Geisinger Medical Center. With a Masters in Public Health, she advocates for diabetic community health. Dr. Zinszer contributes to Advances in Skin and Wound Care, edits the Wound Care Chapter in Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Compendium, and actively participates in wound care organizations. Currently, she represents APMA in the SVS Diabetic Foot Guideline writing group.

    Dr. Barbara Delmore, a nurse with 35 years of experience, holds a doctorate from New York University and is board certified in wound care. She serves as Senior Nurse Scientist at NYU Langone Health and Clinical Assistant Professor at the Hansjӧrg Wyss Department of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Delmore is a prolific author and presenter, contributing to numerous publications and serving on advisory boards. She is the Wound Editor for WCET journal and a board member of APWCA. Recognized for her contributions, she was awarded Master status by APWCA and has received grants for her research on pressure injuries and chronic wounds. Dr. Delmore has been honored with awards including the Nursing Spectrum Excellence Awards and the Clinical Innovation Award from NYU.
